NEW TOOL FOR TRAINERS

We recently competed mapping and developing the Teacher's Guide for this new e-learning tool. The Suicide Assessment & Intervention: Men at Risk eLearning tool plus Teacher's Guide is a valuable training resource for teachers of specific units within the (CHC02) Community Services Training Package, and other Training Packages. It is appropriate to be used in several core units and elective units in nationally recognised qualifications. The tool is acknowledged as an important resource in the assessment of risk of suicide and intervention strategies and is endorsed by a range of agencies and initiatives. ( beyondblue, Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention)

The teacher's guide is designed for teachers in registered training organisations who deliver units from nationally recognised training. It provides mapping documents for:

  1. (CHCCS501A) Assess and respond to individuals at risk of self-harm or suicide
  2. (CHCTC4A) Provide competent suicide intervention over the telephone
  3. (CHCTC3A) Provide counselling in crisis situations
  4. (CHCTC2A) Undertake telephone counselling
  5. (CHCCS403A) Provide brief intervention
  6. (CHCCS402A) Respond holistically to client issues.

Learners in the above units may come from, or be entering into:

  • Aged Care and Disability Work
  • Employment Services
  • Youth Work and Juvenile Justice
  • Social Housing
  • Community Services plus others in health etc

The tool is also suitable for several units in Public Services, Correctional Services, Health Training Packages.

Interested RTOs can see a brief evaluation demo of the tool on Crisis Support's web site  http://www.crisissupport.org.au/

It is best for RTOs to register interest in the tool PLUS the TEACHER'S GUIDE with Michael Ried or Tim Chamberlain at Crisis Support, as they will be able to explain cost, licensing for education and use on flexible learning labs etc etc.  Michael is mried@crisissupport.org.au and Tim at tchamberlain@crisissupport.org.au   Both are at 03 8371 2800.

Organisations provided with frontline management training by me have included Retirement Services Australia, Sensis, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Aust.

Prior to entering the training industry, Tony had a long career in the clothing industry. For many years in senior management positions with companies such as Levi Strauss (as Marketing Manager) and Bluegrass Clothing (as Managing Director). During the 90's he ran his own successful clothing retail business before selling it to move into training and development.

GOING VIRTUAL 06

GOING VIRTUAL - The Future of Work
The Third Annual Asia-Pacific Conference on Remote, Virtual Working
Melbourne , October 25-26, 2006

Going Virtual was another great success this year with an outstanding line up of speakers.
A report on 2005 is below and a report on the 2006 conference will be added in November. More information is available on the the Going Virtual website.

2005 report by Margaret Aspin

We've just returned from sunny Brisbane where we ran two workshops and Margaret co-chaired the Going Virtual 2005 conference. Last year our speakers were clear about the need for a focus on people not technology in virtual teams and the need for better management skills in managing virtual, remote workers. This year our speakers included Monika Altmaier from Seimens in Munich, Dr Laga van Beek from DCITA, Mike Sinclair from Shell plus many other excellent people from government, academia, vocational education and training, and industry. This year speakers focused more on Teleworking , management of remote workers, eLearning and mLearning training issues, and case stories from people working successfully in this way. This year has been a big year for teleworking in Australia , with government research, many new mobile tools available, and an interest in attracting and retaining older workers.

Attendees asked our team (Margaret Aspin, Dr John Gundry from Knowledge Ability, and Kathy Nightingale from TNI) to hold another conference in 2006 as this event was seen as the premier event both organised and delivered by specialists in the field. The team are already discussing which city the conference could move to in its third year, plus some new ways to include many more from vocational education and training and academia.

More about the conference at www.goingvirtual.com.au

Dr Gundry visits Australia regularly and meets with government, education and training and industry.

E-PERFORMANCE NETWORK

We are working with the ABC and eWorks to put the ePerformance Network online. Moodle is the tool used for this network. The network looks at perfomance management tools for Human Resources and Organisational Development managers.

E-performance Network - Exploring E-tools for improving business results for training
Electronic tools are providing new opportunities for integrating learning and work. There are now collaborative web-based approaches for identifying skill gaps, matching individual and organisational needs, planning and providing learning environments, supporting application of outcomes in the workflow, and tracking impact on the organisation's performance.

This network will explore emerging models, systems and tools for supporting the transfer of learning outcomes from training into performance improvement results in the workplace.

The group will identify available e-performance tools, arrange online demonstrations and discussions, and gather case studies and lessons learned from organisations who are using these approaches. The network will be of value to anyone interested in planning, supporting and evaluating performance improvement strategies in their organisation.

Contact Margaret at marasp@aspinonlineconsulting.com.au to find out more. You may also like to go to the network at http://www.groups.edna.edu.au/course/view.php?id=439

You may be asked to register before being able to log in.

Successful training for pharmacists, GPs and drug and alcohol workers 2005

On behalf of the PSA (Vic Branch), we project managed the Pharmacists as Partners in Training Strategies on Alcohol and Licit Substances project October 2004 – June 2005.

This project, funded by the AER Foundation was designed to enable health partners, in particular Pharmacists, General Practitioners and alcohol and licit drug related organisations particularly in regional and rural locations, to work in a partnership to develop training strategies.

The Project Team included Margaret Aspin , Mez Wiseman , Russ Grosvenor a Pharmacist from the PSA, Paul Lumb a Drug & Alcohol Worker and Cheryl Martin an Evaluator from the Bendigo and District Division of General Practice.

A Reference Committee was put together and advised the project team on the main alcohol and licit drug related issues within the Shepparton area. The reference committee and the project team were in constant communication through the use of TAFE VC.

The Project was piloted in Shepparton and Wangaratta and included:

  • Training for a group of health workers including Pharmacists, GPs, Drug and Alcohol, Youth and Mental Health Workers on alcohol and licit substance abuse
  • The release of take home kits including information and local places to contact for further help about alcohol and licit drug problems
  • A media campaign launched to coincide with the release of the kits
  • A Community Workshop was held for the community to receive information surrounding alcohol and licit drug problems and to get to know their local professionals

The project may roll out all over Victoria .

The project has been strongly supported in the Shepparton and Wangaratta region, and the following organisations plus many more are involved in the project in some way:

•  Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Victorian branch)

•  Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation

•  Bendigo and District Division of General Practice

Toshiba Flexible Working Guide 2005

In 2004, Toshiba sponsored research which revealed that many employers still haven't learned to trust employees they cannot see. A Flexible Working guide was then written in conjunction with a special interest group including Aspin Online Consulting. The media release of the guide states:

“Toshiba was prompted to establish the Flexible Workplace Special Interest Group and develop the guide following the research it commissioned in 2004, which showed that management beliefs, including mistrust of employees, were one of the main reasons behind a slow uptake of flexible working. The difficultly in monitoring and supervising employees was perceived to be the greatest disadvantage of flexible working; in other words, many organisations simply didn't know how to manage staff when they couldn't see them. This indicated that there was scope to increase trust by using performance criteria rather than attendance-based evaluation techniques.

To obtain a copy of the Flexible Working: A Guide to Creating and Managing

a Flexible Workplace or the original Mobility and Mistrust report, please visit:

www.isd.toshiba.com.au/sig/downloads or contact Toshiba on 13 30 70.”

The group discovered new skills for trainers, inducting, managing and assessing online plus learn about mLearning on PDAs and building an online learning community. The group did a presentation at the Learnscope conference in Ballarat on the 14 th of October http://www.ballarat.edu.au/vfed/learning_and_teaching/educational_projects/2005/learnscope/learnscope_2005.shtml
