Open Source Hosting and Training
At last! Open source systems for small to medium enterprise budgets and operations!
ASPIN is delighted to announce it is now providing training for the following Open Source systems, on behalf of Enterprise Intelligence Systems:
Open Bravo. This is an enterprise system just right to meet the budget and operating needs of small to medium businesses with warehousing, financial, management, and many other features. Our training is available at the workplace and online!
Sugar CRM. This customer relationship management system is very fast and easy to learn, minimal training will get you there! We like it so much that we use it every day to manage our customer database needs. We couldn't afford expensive systems but we wanted what the big companies can afford, and we want something easy to log into over a web page. This one was just right and has made a big difference to us.
Zimbra. We were sick of email systems that we couldn't log into easily when we were out of the office and we really like Outlook. Zimbra is a dream come true. It looks so similar to Outlook and in the office we still use Outlook if we like – it all works together perfectly. Everyone in our company is raving about how it has improved our calendaring and communications. Some training to get you started and you are up and running straight away.
We are starting to get our training prepped for Enterprise Intelligence Systems new offerings in reporting and other management tools.
To find out more about the systems, hosting and support visit http://www.eintel.com.au/
To get some training happening ring our training team on 03 9898 4732 or email us on info@aspinonlineconsulting.com.au
What is Open Source and why would I bother?
Open source systems do not require licence costs and so are affordable for Small and Medium Enterprises. The systems are able to be customised because the way they are made is open to see and change. This is unlike expensive vendor software which you pay licence fees for, and wait in hope for new features to come out. Ben and Ben from EINTEL have spent 2 years investigating the best Open Source for small to medium enterprises and have selected outstanding, easy to master systems. Ben and Ben are located at the ASPIN administration office at Box Hill North. You are invited to call into can drop by our offices and talk to them personally!

Latest exciting news on Teleworking!
The Telework Australia web site is now up and running at www.teleworkaustralia.com.au. Visit to see excellent information, case studies and resources for businesses and individuals.
Margaret Aspin was interviewed by Channel Seven Sunrise program about Teleworking and will be running a Telstra Business breakfast in Sydney on 7th December 2007.
In October we formed a relationship with two organisations to bring a one stop ‘Consulting, Recruitment and Training' solution to businesses needing flexible workers in Australia. Our partners Telework New Zealand www.telework.co.nz and we will be provide consulting, RTEL www.rtelsolutions.com.au will provide the recruitment of Teleworkers for businesses and we will provide training for the Teleworkers and businesses. Contact us to discover more about what this could do for your organisation.
Interview with Ben Sommerville
Ben Sommerville is part of Enterprise Intelligence Systems, a software systems company that has formed a partnership with ASPIN. Amanda Elfverson asks him a little bit about himself and his business.
What is your Background?
Having begun in publishing and newspapers, I moved into telecommunications with a strong interest in business systems. Here, I began to focus on the development of software systems, and ways to implement the chosen packages for each individual client.
When and why did the company first begin?
Enterprise Intelligence Systems first began in 2006, when Ben and I were working on a project for a client. We couldn't find any appropriate software systems available for our client to use, and began to look into ‘Open Source' packages, software released freely to companies, without a license fee, and can readily use their source codes. From further research into the way this company operates, Ben and I decided to form Enterprise Intelligence Systems, which provides software for small to medium businesses to get their business started. Throughout 2006, we spent much time collecting packages which were most suitable for what the majority of our clients want, and at the beginning of 2007, we brought our packages to market.
What are your great plans for the future?
To have continual growth and recognition within our market and to be the premier company for Australian's to purchase!
What is the connection between Enterprise Intelligence Systems and Aspin?
Other than sharing an office, Aspin provides us with the training materials needed for the implementation of our packages. They are much better at training than we are!

New partnership to improve job outcomes through Teleworking in Australia
We are now part of an important Australian partnership which seeks to recruit, training and support Teleworkers. Our recruitment partners RTEL Solutions specialise in recruiting Teleworkers for medium to large businesses and government.
We are the training partner providing training in how to Telework for the individual and managing Teleworkers for companies and government departments. IT and OH&S support forms the reminder of the partnership, making the whole thing a one stop shop for organisations needing a ready workforce.
This partnership builds on our strength in Teleworking training and opens the doors for many willing workers in all areas of Australia. Teleworkers work in all industries. They may be mums returning to the workforce or mature aged workers and any other person who wants life/work balance.
Teleworkers normally work from their own home or in a supported community establishment. They may work full time or part time and live any where in Australia. Backgrounds are very mixed and so is the type of work needed. Editors, designers, trainers, marketers, and many more skills sets are needed by Australian businesses.

Going Virtual 06
GOING VIRTUAL - The Future of Work
The Third Annual Asia-Pacific Conference on Remote, Virtual Working
Melbourne , October 25-26, 2006
Going Virtual was another great success this year with an outstanding line up of speakers.
A report on 2005 is below and a report on the 2006 conference will be added in November. More information is available on the the Going Virtual website.
2005 report by Margaret Aspin
We've just returned from sunny Brisbane where we ran two workshops and Margaret co-chaired the Going Virtual 2005 conference. Last year our speakers were clear about the need for a focus on people not technology in virtual teams and the need for better management skills in managing virtual, remote workers. This year our speakers included Monika Altmaier from Seimens in Munich, Dr Laga van Beek from DCITA, Mike Sinclair from Shell plus many other excellent people from government, academia, vocational education and training, and industry. This year speakers focused more on Teleworking , management of remote workers, eLearning and mLearning training issues, and case stories from people working successfully in this way. This year has been a big year for teleworking in Australia , with government research, many new mobile tools available, and an interest in attracting and retaining older workers.
Attendees asked our team (Margaret Aspin, Dr John Gundry from Knowledge Ability, and Kathy Nightingale from TNI) to hold another conference in 2006 as this event was seen as the premier event both organised and delivered by specialists in the field. The team are already discussing which city the conference could move to in its third year, plus some new ways to include many more from vocational education and training and academia.
More about the conference at www.goingvirtual.com.au
Dr Gundry visits Australia regularly and meets with government, education and training and industry.
E-PERFORMANCE NETWORK
We are working with the ABC and eWorks to put the ePerformance Network online. Moodle is the tool used for this network. The network looks at perfomance management tools for Human Resources and Organisational Development managers.
E-performance Network - Exploring E-tools for improving business results for training
Electronic tools are providing new opportunities for integrating learning and work. There are now collaborative web-based approaches for identifying skill gaps, matching individual and organisational needs, planning and providing learning environments, supporting application of outcomes in the workflow, and tracking impact on the organisation's performance.
This network will explore emerging models, systems and tools for supporting the transfer of learning outcomes from training into performance improvement results in the workplace.
The group will identify available e-performance tools, arrange online demonstrations and discussions, and gather case studies and lessons learned from organisations who are using these approaches. The network will be of value to anyone interested in planning, supporting and evaluating performance improvement strategies in their organisation.
Contact Margaret at marasp@aspinonlineconsulting.com.au to find out more. You may also like to go to the network at http://www.groups.edna.edu.au/course/view.php?id=439
You may be asked to register before being able to log in.

Successful training for pharmacists, GPs and drug and alcohol workers 2005
On behalf of the PSA (Vic Branch), we project managed the Pharmacists as Partners in Training Strategies on Alcohol and Licit Substances project October 2004 – June 2005.
This project, funded by the AER Foundation was designed to enable health partners, in particular Pharmacists, General Practitioners and alcohol and licit drug related organisations particularly in regional and rural locations, to work in a partnership to develop training strategies.
The Project Team included Margaret Aspin , Mez Wiseman , Russ Grosvenor a Pharmacist from the PSA, Paul Lumb a Drug & Alcohol Worker and Cheryl Martin an Evaluator from the Bendigo and District Division of General Practice.
A Reference Committee was put together and advised the project team on the main alcohol and licit drug related issues within the Shepparton area. The reference committee and the project team were in constant communication through the use of TAFE VC.
The Project was piloted in Shepparton and Wangaratta and included:
- Training for a group of health workers including Pharmacists, GPs, Drug and Alcohol, Youth and Mental Health Workers on alcohol and licit substance abuse.
- The release of take home kits including information and local places to contact for further help about alcohol and licit drug problems.
- A media campaign launched to coincide with the release of the kits.
- A Community Workshop was held for the community to receive information surrounding alcohol and licit drug problems and to get to know their local professionals.
The project may roll out all over Victoria.
The project has been strongly supported in the Shepparton and Wangaratta region, and the following organisations plus many more are involved in the project in some way:
- Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Victorian branch)
- Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation
- Bendigo and District Division of General Practice
- Department of Human Services

This continuing education opportunity began with a grant from Multimedia Victoria. Contact Margaret Aspin to discover more about eCommerce roadshows and what Multimedia Victoria can do for your industry.
Toshiba Flexible Working Guide 2005
In 2004, Toshiba sponsored research which revealed that many employers still haven't learned to trust employees they cannot see. A Flexible Working guide was then written in conjunction with a special interest group including Aspin Online Consulting. The media release of the guide states:
“Toshiba was prompted to establish the Flexible Workplace Special Interest Group and develop the guide following the research it commissioned in 2004, which showed that management beliefs, including mistrust of employees, were one of the main reasons behind a slow uptake of flexible working. The difficultly in monitoring and supervising employees was perceived to be the greatest disadvantage of flexible working; in other words, many organisations simply didn't know how to manage staff when they couldn't see them. This indicated that there was scope to increase trust by using performance criteria rather than attendance-based evaluation techniques.
To obtain a copy of the Flexible Working: A Guide to Creating and Managing a Flexible Workplace or the original Mobility and Mistrust report, please visit: www.isd.toshiba.com.au/sig/downloads or contact Toshiba on 13 30 70.
